Which Lyndahl in-wall speaker suits me? The model guide

Hardly any topic fills our support inbox as reliably as the question of which in-wall speaker system is the right one. This guide sums up what has proven itself in almost ten years of Lyndahl speaker consulting.

Two routes to a ceiling speaker

Lyndahl offers two concepts: the closed Bluetooth set (CS200BT), where the amplifier is already built into the speaker — and the separate Bluetooth amplifier (AMP4X15BT) with freely selectable passive speakers. Which route fits is almost always decided by two questions: Should external sources be able to play in via cable later? And should more than two speakers play?

The closed set: CS200BT

The CS200BT consists of an active speaker with a built-in Bluetooth amplifier board and a passive speaker. One socket, two ceiling cut-outs — done. Music comes exclusively via Bluetooth: there is no AUX input, and additional speakers cannot be connected. In return, the system is wonderfully uncomplicated and long-lived: the amplifier board can be replaced as a spare part with just a few screws, and if you later switch to an external amplifier after all, the active speaker can be converted into a passive one (the internal cable is disconnected from the board).

The flexible route: AMP4X15BT plus passive speakers

The AMP4X15BT — known to long-standing customers as the CS200BT-AMP; the device was merely renamed and now carries a more recent Bluetooth chip — is a compact 4-channel amplifier with 4 × 15 W RMS, Bluetooth and an AUX input. It drives up to four passive speakers of 4 to 8 ohms and runs on a 12 V power supply. This also allows a TV, flush-mounted radio or other sources to be connected by cable — the most common reason to choose this concept.

The passive speakers at a glance

  • CS200P (5.25", 80 W, 8 Ω): the proven all-rounder and our best-selling in-wall speaker for years — widest distribution, best bass for the money.
  • CS200S (5.25", 100 W, 8 Ω): the successor generation with a pivoting tweeter, another step ahead in sound.
  • CS234T (6.5", 120 W, 8 Ω): the largest diaphragm in the range with a pivoting titanium tweeter — the most reserve for larger rooms.
  • CS120AL (120 mm, aluminium): the smallest, with a ceiling cut-out of only about 106 mm. First choice when space is tight or looks matter — more than sufficient for background music, with audibly less bass than the 5.25-inch class.
  • CS180IP (6.5", IP44): the damp-room specialist for bathrooms, kitchens and covered outdoor areas — with a titanium dome and splash-proof construction.
  • CS195ST (stereo dual voice coil): reproduces both stereo channels from one speaker — both channels are connected, i.e. four cable terminals. Honestly: you choose this speaker only when there is no room for two. A classic stereo effect cannot arise from a single point.
  • SB242M (5.25", 80 W, wall mounting): the solution when ceiling installation is not possible — a surface-mounted compact speaker for conference rooms, schools, offices and hospitality.

How many speakers for which room?

From consulting practice: two speakers cover a meeting room of about 40 m² well, four speakers are enough for around 75 m² of background sound — as long as nobody expects a disco. More important than the wattage is the diaphragm area: there is no direct relationship between watts and sound — low notes simply need diaphragm. And: all four outputs of the AMP4X15BT play the same signal — separate zones need their own amplifier per zone.

Damp rooms, outdoors, sauna

All models may go into the bathroom as long as they are not exposed to direct water spray and the room is ventilated normally. Closer to the water and in covered outdoor areas, the CS180IP with IP44 protection is the right choice. The amplifier itself has no protection rating: it always belongs in a dry area at −10 to +40 °C — in a bathroom, therefore, outside the wet zone, for example in the suspended ceiling of the hallway. We give no approval for saunas: at the temperatures common there, adhesive joints come apart; body-sound systems (exciters) are the right technology for that.

Honest limits

The systems are built for uncomplicated room sound, not as a hi-fi or home-cinema replacement. Bluetooth cannot technically deliver multiroom synchronisation across several rooms; we deliberately do not carry Wi-Fi speakers. And for motorhomes: the amplifier runs on 12 V — but on a raw on-board network only with a stabilised supply, as voltage spikes during starting and charging can damage the device. We advise against permanently installing the speakers in a vehicle — the boards are not designed for constant driving vibrations.
